TUSC 20/21 Election: Make Your Voice Heard I By Jesveena
It’s election season, which means it’s time to step up and vote for your preferred candidates to represent your voice on campus! The Taylor’s University Student Council Election is carried out on a yearly basis where all Taylorians vote for their choice of representatives. This year’s Debate and Speech Day was a little different compared to the previous sessions due to the pandemic. The event held on the 17th September, which was also live streamed on Facebook, saw an election of candidates passionately expressing what they stand for and what they have to offer should they be voted in. Still scratching your head on who to vote for? Fret not!
Check out this article to see what this year’s candidates have to offer on the table.
The prime candidates running for president this year are Accounting and Finance student Jonathan Jeremiah and Psychology student Jin Rong. Jonathan does not wish to offer empty promises but instead, he promises to offer his time, dedication and effort. He confidently declared that he is here to enhance, empower and unite - 3 essential elements that he believes can improve the welfare, well-being and overall university experience of all Taylorians. Jonathan firmly states that “Life is not measured by the amount of breaths you take, but by the moments that take your breath away!” and ended his speech by saying, “Let me be your student council president to show you how much I can do for you and take your breath away.”

Jin Rong who has held the position of Secretary & Treasurer of TUSC for 19/20 term began his speech with the reason why he pursued Psychology. He had a bad experience when he was little and the person he is today, standing in front of all of us is because he managed to pull through everything he has been through thanks to the helping hand he received from his psychologist. Being in that situation made him understand the warmth of being helped especially when he is really in need. To make changes and help people around him, he joined NGOs and even contributed to the United Nations for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) conference.
“With my experience and passion, I believe I could lead my team to fight for the voice of students. The one thing I could promise is that my team and I will do our best to amplify the voice of Taylorians, we will do our best to pull everyone together to make it through this pandemic, and we will do our best to make a change in Taylor’s. I would be honored if any of you chose to vote for me starting tomorrow,” said Jin Rong in his closing statement.

Calvin began with a personal story of how he was alone when he first came to university but ultimately made the decision that things needed to change if he wanted to be heard. In the span of 12 months, Calvin held multiple leadership posts, working side by side with NGOs and even representing Malaysia on a global stage just a month ago. Now, he is standing in front of everyone, with his voice finally loud enough to tell what he is going to change about Taylor’s and the 3 goals that he is determined to achieve - empower students through advocacy and upskilling, unite relationships by bringing students closer to each other and enhance the campus experience by creating a lively campus culture.
“Why should you vote for me? I will make mistakes for sure, I am human just like you. I am not here to make a perfect president but I am here to promise you that I’ll make a great one. Most importantly I care, I truly care to bring you a better campus experience as I’m also a student studying in Taylors,” said Calvin before ending his speech.

Thaarishya who is running against Calvin for the position of Vice President in the Student Council emphasized student unity in her speech. “If we are not united, we will not be able to bring transformation or address any issues. Communities that are divided have no real power to bring changes to enhance the well-being of its people and empower them. As members of TUSC, it is imperative that we are transparent in communicating with Taylorians and in our decision-making process so that no one is left behind and every voice is heard.” She added, “We must be transparent, because transparency invites trust by revealing that we have nothing to hide as TUSC members. We establish ourselves as honest and credible people in the eyes of our fellow students. If we gain the trust of our student community, irrespective of their colour and creed, that would certainly enhance our unity in diversity''.
Thaarishya also emphasized on “wanting the campus to be a safe place for diversity”. Her exact words were, “We want this campus to be inclusive and throughout the Student Council Election, people have only talked about general views but no one has brought in inclusiveness and neither have they mentioned diversity. It is such a pity that even though there are exchange students from Denmark, Italy, the United States, Sweden every semester, not even 10% of the Taylor’s University student population get a chance to mingle around with them. After all, Taylor’s is a multicultural cosmopolitan campus.”
In her closing statement, she mentioned that if she gets voted in, she would be more than happy to minimise the local and international students gap to prompt actual meaningful connections among Taylorians and this is important to her as this will make sure everyone feels appreciated and create a sense of belonging.

“As what Spiderman has mentioned, with great power comes great responsibility.” Cray is running for the position of the Director of Campus Integration because he has the passion and experience in organising various events in the past. When he was 15, Cray experienced being a Project Manager for the first time as he worked for an event company which organized traditional games for children. Since then, he discovered his interest in organizing events and he joined many events in Penang such as StarWalk, Heritage Treasure Hunt, and he also hosted minor events in schools. In 2019, Cray was the Vice President of HELP Foundation where he initiated and organized events for students. Therefore, he perfectly understands the taste and preference of students when it comes to events.
Cray wishes to unite Taylorians through various events organized by TUSC. This means that he is ready and prepared to work together with Taylor’s management and students in resolving problems and host various events for the benefit of Taylorians. “Also, while working together, we will build up strong relationships with each other and we will treasure this friendship, partnership or connection until the far future.” said Cray.

Tisya, another candidate who is running for the position of Director of Campus Integration, stated that, “If I was elected as the director of campus integration, I would work hard on creating a more exciting, positive and friendly environment for all the students by organizing various events that are based on student interest. I believe that events bring happiness for all students including myself.” She also stated that she will organise diverse events based on students’ interest as she will conduct a thorough research regarding student interest and their preferences on events beforehand. Additionally, she will also provide assistance and support for activities that are organised by the club and societies at Taylor’s University. Lastly, Tisya added that, “I will try my best to organize more beneficial events to increase the interest of the students to be more open to each other’s diversities in the university itself.”
