“Cinema is a mirror by which we often see ourselves.”
- Alejandro G. Inarritu
Filmmaking, as a compelling dance of light and narrative, has a phenomenal potential to take us beyond the confines of reality. It weaves emotions, ideas, and dreams into a visual tapestry with each frame, offering us a mirror to a gateway into unmapped territories. As the projector turns on, we start on a shared journey of imagination, where tales develop and perspectives collide, reminding us of the fundamental necessity of capturing short-lived moments that define us as humans.
Origin of the Idea
Sunway Echo Media, Sunway University and Sunway College’s exclusive creative student leadership body aimed to highlight the talents of young creatives by providing a platform for them to showcase their creations. A short film competition was deemed ideal for this purpose. Initially proposed by the event chairperson, Mr Yun Jing, this concept aimed to arouse enthusiasm for the Malaysian film industry among aspiring movie buffs. A critical aspect of the student-led film was instilling meaningful lessons addressing relevant real-world issues into the short films, alongside contesting participants’ cinematographic abilities as well as their capability to tell engaging yet emotionally profound stories. The outcomes were nothing short of spectacular, confirming the effectiveness of the chosen approach.
Going Above and Beyond
The Echo Film Fest exceeded expectations and shattered boundaries bringing forth immense happiness and pride for Sunway Echo Media. The participation of a diverse range of filmmakers from various backgrounds across Klang Valley prompted a profound sense of satisfaction for the entire organising team and the event’s stakeholders. These creators came together with a common goal in mind: to share unique stories that shed light on specific Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) objectives, where the winning film explored an array of critical issues like poverty, climate action and gender equality.

The overwhelming wave of gratitude that permeated the atmosphere was further amplified by the support received from both Sunway University and College students, as well as the presence of the top five contestants’ friends and families at the screening event. Those who attended the event echoed these sentiments, attesting to the impact and quality of the works on display. Despite the initial uncertainties that cast a shadow over its success, the team’s unwavering dedication and tireless efforts in transforming the event from a concept into a tangible reality were undeniably commendable. The event was the pinnacle of Echo Media’s annual calendar, marking a critical juncture in the progressive journey of the thriving society.
Furthermore, the contestant's artworks covered various languages, storylines and cinematography techniques. The organisers were astounded by the calibre of the participants’ entries and the time and effort put into each submitted short film. Despite shared geographical boundaries, this response served as a poignant reminder of the nation’s rich tapestry of diversity.
Spirit and Setting
The palpable excitement that permeated the hall as each film was screened struck the observer, with the audience displaying genuine engagement with each short film. The profound silence that descended on the hall during the screening of the winning silent film, ‘Let Bygones Be Bygones’ was especially notable.
The event’s emcees, Fatimah and Jimmy, were a huge hit pair, capturing the audience’s hearts with their charisma and comedic flair. Attendees actively participated, asking thoughtful questions about the stories behind each film and gaining insight into the creator’s artistic choices. The audience’s apparent resonance with the short films was undeniable, with many finding their own ways to connect with the stories, a defining moment for the filmmakers as their creations unfolded and gave them a significant sense of accomplishment. Highlights of the event included the emcees’ dynamic presence and consistent humour. While apprehension existed prior to the event, it gradually faded and was replaced by elation from the support and positivity of the contestants.
Filmmaking has become a powerful catalyst for change in the hands of young people. They carve a path toward a future that questions the present, embraces diversity, and sparks dialogues that reform both politics and norms, as they wield cameras in one hand and amusingly apply creativity in something as intimate as a depiction of death or marriage. The youth community shapes not only films but also the very essence of progress for future generations through storytelling.
“Filmmaking is a chance to live many lifetimes.”
- Robert Altman
