Sky: Children of the Light Review | By Ng Zhao Shian
Source: androidpolice Sky: Children of the Light is the latest title of Thatgamecompany. Let it immerse you into its colorful and artistic world with charming visuals, melodious music and overall chill atmosphere, allowing you to travel through time as hours come and go without you ever realising it.
Take flight as a child of light on a mission to guide the spirits back to the constellation by reliving their memories through six vastly different realms. The kingdoms all have their own unique themes ranging from a bright and sunny prairie to rainy but calming forests and unforgiving, abandoned wastelands.
Each spirit will provide cosmetics that allow you to dress your character up with different hairstyles, capes, and more to don and adore. Besides, spirits will all bestow you an expression/ action to perform like laughter, anger or even a handstand.
For as long as humans have been on Earth, we have always wondered how it felt to fly through the air like a bird. Human flight was only made possible in 1903 when the Wright brothers first took flight into the sky and the rest was history. However, that type of flight is nowhere close to the flight of a bird. We are not really in control of the wings, nor can we feel the wind blowing on our faces. Sky gives us a sense of how it would truly be like to have the power to soar through the air like a winged animal that we can only dream of.
In our current era filled with competitions in every stage of our lives, I have always found it mystifying that we would want to add to that competition with stressful games. If you’ve ever shared this sentiment, then this game is perfect for you! There are no competitions whatsoever as the only objectives are to join, make new friends and explore! However, for those who do like competing, you may make your own competitions in the game as well like racing through the harsh snowy mountains or using the in-game feature to play hide and seek with friends!
A decision maker for many people in committing to a game is how well the game company handles the monetary system and gets their players to spend cash. This is especially important because of the invention of the gacha and loot boxes mechanics so commonly seen in games nowadays that use neuroscientific techniques to get their players addicted. Fortunately, I am happy to say that this is a very safe game for my broke brothers and sisters to play as there are no gacha systems. You know what you're bargaining for and its exact price. Furthermore, there is absolutely no reason to spend money at all if you don't want to as the only things you can purchase are cosmetics. I find game companies that do not rely on the ‘pay to win’ concept respectable.
The multiplayer aspect is a huge plus in the game as it promotes cooperation between players. As you roam the realm, you may see players traveling the same paths as you, giving you an elating sense of camaraderie. It is the perfect game for social butterflies as it allows you to make friends around the globe.
The game is also very good in keeping friendships afloat as you will always have fun things to do with friends in the game like finding new places to explore and sometimes random shenanigans to kill time. Especially nowadays when seeing our friends is harder than finding the solution in an A2 maths problem, Sky acts as a bridge to bring us for a fun ride together.
Musically talented children can get and play musical instruments in the game too with a wide range of instruments to choose from. Instruments currently available in the game include the piano, flute, pan flute, trumpet, harp, guitar, mandolin, pipa, bass, horn, bell and more to come. Check out this cover of My Little Sunshine or Lovely by Billie Eilish from YouTube.
Nonetheless, despite all its strengths, boredom seems to be a big problem for the game. It really isn't suited for people who do not have anyone to play with as the gameplay loop gets repetitive over time. The original excitement of discovering new places can only last so long, after all. However, their content is always getting updated with additions of new places to explore and new mechanics to enjoy. Besides, there are some issues you will meet while playing with friends due to poor internet connection like lagging and changing servers, separating you from your companions.

Overall, I think Sky is a very enjoyable game that satisfies your thirst for entertainment while keeping your loneliness in check as well. Who wouldn't want a game you can relax and fall back on to after a day of hard work? So, what are you waiting for? You’ve already obtained your wings, all you have to do now is take flight!
