People say you are the average of the five persons whom you spend the most time with. Are they your best friends? What do you look for in a friend? Someone with good humor? Someone who is a good listener? Or someone a little weird to match your inner weirdness? You may have a few close friends, a gang, or one whom you cherish the most.

As most of us are going through the phase of young adulting, you will find yourself in a sea of people, but you will also find out who your true friends are. You will notice that these people are the ones who are there for you at your worst, the ones who let you call them any time of the day just because you are scared, lonely, or bored. They are there for you spiritually, no matter the distance. The little things they do, like replying to your random Instagram Story or sending you a meme just because it reminded them of you, make a difference in your life. They make your day brighter and your smile a little bit wider. They listen to your stories and make sure you’re okay. They are the ones who have your back and lend you their shoulder to cry on. It could be that one person you trust the most, the few close friends you do crazy things with, or that gang you go to every time someone hurts you, and they comfort you so that you forget the pain.

Along the way, you will meet friends whom you had a spark with, but that spark did not last. You wonder if they will return to your life or be gone forever. Sometimes, they are only there in a specific period of your life. Maybe you thought that the both of you might grow old with each other and do all the lame things old people do together.

However, sometimes paths change and sometimes they become someone entirely different. They change so much that they are no longer the people you used to know. Maybe they've become toxic—and that’s when you should let them know. They may try to understand and reflect on themselves. They may try to change, or they may not. If you've tried to help them time and time again and things still don't work out, don't be afraid to let go. It’s okay to be selfish enough to love yourself first and decide what is best for you. Nonetheless, those fleeting friendships have shaped a part of who you are today. Even though they are not with you now, memories will last for a lifetime, and we wish them all the best.

Your true friend is your ally, your confidant, and your comrade at war. They might not always be there physically, but they are there emotionally and spiritually. The both of you may have filmed Tik Toks together, or gone through hard times like rushing assignments and working past bedtime with each other. What are the most memorable things you’ve done with your best friend?
