DIY, an acronym for do it yourself, is an activity for people to do in the comfort of their own homes. This concept has skyrocketed in the last decade. Whether it’s building a treehouse or making a book from scratch, the art of DIY lives as a fun and productive way to keep busy.

This concept became particularly popular during the recent pandemic where everyone was confined to their homes, making the urge to do a ‘hands on’ task more in demand than ever. As the rise of DIY came about, so did the realisation of what ingredients actually go into our everyday products. Many people do not realise that the products they have in their house contain harmful ingredients that could potentially hurt them in the long run. Majority of soaps, shampoos and conditioners contain sulfur and parabens which can strip the body or it’s natural moisture, causing balding and dry scalp.

Moreover, the fragrances used in most commercial soaps are artificial, and studies have shown that this has strong links to diseases such as cancer. More and more large companies are facing lawsuits over the toxic elements in their products, so what better time to put the fun DIY to use and make your own soap!

If that idea has enticed you, take a look at this fabulous event hosted by Taylor’s C.S.I. Volunteers, in collaboration with Craftivity. There are so many reasons to join this great workshop: Firstly, all profits will go to multiple charities including Furry Friends Farm, Malaysia and Rimba and Beautiful Gate Foundation for the Disabled. Moreover, this workshop is the perfect place to get a beginner’s guide on DIY products as well as soap making itself. It is also hosted by arts and crafts experts at Craftivity so you are getting great tips from the pioneers themselves! Not to mention this is a fun way to fill up your weekend during the pandemic.

For many, soap making is just the beginning of a more holistic approach towards life. Although a commercial product may claim to be “100% organic” or “free of chemicals”, there are many underlying ingredients that actually cause us more harm than good. A great example of this would be SLS (Sodium Laureth Sulfate), an anionic detergent which is often used as a foaming agent for many self-care products such as face wash and soap. Although to the naked eye it could just be another chemical ingredient we don’t look twice at, it actually has harmful side effects like drying of the skin which eventually could lead to eczema or psoriasis.

In addition to this, the ability to make your own self-care products means you can actually customise it to what suits your skin perfectly. For example, if you are someone prone to breakouts or acne, customizing a soap would be perfect for you since you can remove or substitute any ingredients that may be hurting your skin.

All in all, if you are looking for a fun way to spend your weekend, this is definitely the place to be! Soap making is a fun and healthy outlet for stress relief, so go ahead and sign up now!
