New Taylorians who enrolled in February were welcomed to Taylor's College with a bustling, interactive, and immersive welcoming event organised by Taylor's College Student Council (TCSC). The TCSC members welcomed about 300 new Taylorians and planned various fun, interactive activities that immersed them in Taylor's student culture. The event was held in the Grand Hall on January 31st from 10 a.m. to 11.30 a.m.
The TCSC members devised the ingenious idea of hosting the event within the theme of the fantastical world of Ghibli. The lively, nostalgic, and comforting Ghibli films are loved by all. This was a great example of a unique approach to building an atmosphere where newcomers can feel comfortable and at home in a new place.
TCSC went all out during the ice-breaking session, with the MC portraying the role of Hayao Miyazaki. He played a part in a skit where Miyazaki was involved in a vehicle accident and suffered complete amnesia. Then, using themes from different Ghibli films, the participants had to embark on a trip to bring back Miyazaki's memories through a series of carefully crafted games.
The participants truly had to listen closely to the Whispers of Ghibli and iterate them back to Miyazaki to revive his lost memories. 300 participants were divided into groups of fifteen under the supervision of TCSC supervisors.
In the first part of the event, the newcomers introduced themselves, and then a series of games with Ghibli themes followed.
A wide range of high-energy and exciting games were played, from "Would You Rather" contests where players had to defend their answers to "Designing Howl's Castle" (a Ghibli classic), where players used Sharpies to draw and design Howl's Castle on paper. The participants were also allowed to challenge the points given for their designs and negotiate for more points!
The event’s highlight was Kiki's geo-guesser (from the film Kiki’s Delivery Service), where participants had to guess the countries from pictures of famous landmarks. They were rewarded with one letter from the alphabet for each correct guess. As the game progressed, 18 letters from the alphabet were guessed, forming the secret keyword relaying the heart-warming message, ‘Welcome Feb Freshies!’
While the event may have only been slightly over an hour long, it was jam-packed with energy and fun. Four winning groups were presented with gifts that included pretty trinkets like Ghibli-themed keychains, decals, and stickers. Later, the orientation leaders treated the participants to lunch.
On the 1st and 2nd of February, TSCS also set up a booth at the SLC walkway for new college students to come for assistance, questions, and information on joining the council.
