How To: Vision Board for New Year, New You | By Aishath Zuha (@180202s) and Sophia
December and January are some of the most magical months of the year, filled with holiday cheer and the promise of new beginnings. The new year is like a universal refresh button; the perfect time to turn daydreams into reality. We look back on the rollercoaster of the past year, reflect on all the lessons learnt, and start writing down our dreams and goals for the year ahead. Whether it's rocking a new style, jetting off to exciting places, or jotting down big goals, this is when reinvention feels possible.
This new year, let’s talk about the new and fun way of visualising our upcoming goals; vision boards! You’ve probably heard about them from your favourite influencer or seen them trending on TikTok, but what exactly are they? Simply put, a vision board is a physical or digital collage of pictures, words, and quotes that represent your goals and desires. So, try out something fresh this year as we guide you on how to create your very own vision board!
Step One: Define Your Goals
Before you start snipping away magazine pages or searching for the perfect pictures, take a moment to think about what you really want. Do you want to join a new club, pick up a new hobby, achieve a fitness goal or even become an academic star? A vision board starts with exploring your aspirations and what you want to become. For some, this may be a big dream like moving abroad for a semester. For others, it can be smaller things like eating more healthily or purchasing that cute bag they’ve been eyeing in shops for months. Whatever your goals are, big or small, the most important part is focusing on what truly matters to you.
Step Two: Decide Your Medium
There are two ways you can create your vision board: a physical board or a digital board. Both have their pros and cons so it comes down to your personal preference. If you’re going old school with a physical board, all you need is a notebook, arts and crafts supplies to decorate, and most importantly, the pictures you will be using to visualise your goals. You can use magazine cutouts, your drawings and doodles, and even printouts for this. On the other hand, if you prefer having your vision board easily accessible wherever you go, you might want to try a digital vision board instead. There are many websites you can try to build your vision board in. Some of the go-to choices being Pinterest, Notion, X-Tiles and other organisation websites which also have the features you would need to create a vision board. Canva, Google Slides and Powerpoint can also do the trick if you prefer using them.
Step Three: Curate and Assemble
Now for the fun part: collecting images and words that scream “Yes, this is me.” Whatever medium you may have chosen, find the best pictures that symbolise your goals for the new year. You can collect pictures of your dream wardrobe, bucket list travel destinations, and pictures of studying in a cosy cafe. Vision boards aren’t limited to just pictures. You can also include inspirational quotes or affirmations to motivate you. Once you’re ready, lay everything out before you commit to a design. Play around and have fun with the arrangements made until it feels just right before finalising.
Step Four: Manifest Your Dream Life
Now that you have your very own vision board, it’s time to put in the work. Regularly looking at your vision board is key here. It’s not magical wish fulfilment, it’s about staying focused. Visualising your goals reminds your brain to spot opportunities when they arise and keeps you actively motivated to take action. You can update your vision board as your goals shift and when you have new aspirations. Life happens and you’re not going to be the same person you were at the beginning of the year.
It’s crucial to remember your vision board is more than just pretty pictures. It serves as a constant reminder of what you’re striving for. By taking the time to create one, you’re giving your goals the focus they deserve. So, what are you waiting for? Grab your friends to join in on the fun and begin the first step of creating a new you! Your dream life is waiting—and it looks amazing.
