Swifties rejoice! In light of Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour finally making it to Singapore, Taylor’s Music Club (TMC) hosted a Taylor Swift Tribute Concert. It was held on the 11 March at Lecture Theatre 12. At 6 pm, 30 minutes before the event, the crowd was greeted by the bubbly and energetic MC, Aysha, who shared fun facts about the songs and engaged the audience in a thrilling song guessing game. The night was filled with memorable performances that truly captured the essence of Swift's music, leaving the crowd in awe.

The event kicked off with a powerful rendition of "You Belong With Me," performed by Salma. The band played flawlessly, and the crowd sang along enthusiastically, adding the infamous double clap in arguably Swift’s most popular song, proving their status as hardcore Swifties. The performance was a fitting tribute to one of Swift's most beloved hits, with a touch of the Eras Tour's energy. In the second performance, Kareena delivered a soft rock version of "Back to December," she sang with a slight rasp in her voice that complimented the song very well. This unique take on the song gave it  new life, resonating with the audience as they screamed along to the bridge.

Vocalist Heidi took centre stage for the next song, performing "Cardigan" accompanied with a piano. The heartfelt rendition showcased her incredible vocal range. Next was Andrea's sweet and melodic performance of "State of Grace". It was another standout moment of the night. The crowd cheered in appreciation for this lesser-known gem from Swift's discography. A high-energy duet between Aisyah and Immanuel brought the crowd to their feet during the 5th performance, as they performed the rap version of "Bad Blood” that featured Kendrick Lamar on the original. Their chemistry and enthusiasm created an unforgettable performance that paid homage to Swift's edgier side.

The rock version of "Blank Space'' by Rayhana in the performance right after, showcased the band's fantastic skills and the perfect blend of modern and classic rock elements. The crowd couldn't help but dance along to this iconic hit. Gabby's powerful and smooth vocals in the next performance during "Red" left the audience in awe. Her melodic yet strong performance captured the essence of the original while adding her unique touch to the song. Next, Esther's rendition of "Forever and Always". It was a heartfelt tribute with a karaoke-esque feel that allowed the audience to sing along to one of Swift's most emotional ballads.

Nora's take on "Better than Revenge" was an absolute hit, showcasing her powerful voice and unique interpretation of the lyrics. The crowd screamed along to the lyrics, since the song had gotten popular again after the release of Speak Now (Taylor’s Version). Lastly, Claudia's enchanting performance of "Enchanted" brought the night to a magical close. The crowd nostalgically sang along to the lyrics, while on their feet, bopping away to the catchy tune. Her captivating vocals and the song's iconic bridge left the audience with a lasting impression of the enchanting world Swift has created through her music.

Once the end of the setlist was reached, the crowd was hungry for more and cheered for an encore. But instead of an encore there was then a jam session. A jam session meant that people could scan a QR code and sign up to sing any Taylor Swift song from the list provided by the club that the band knew how to play. A few of the songs were played by members of the performance team and others were sung by members of the crowd. Some notable songs of the night were, Clean, We Are Never Getting Back Together and Lover. The night finally ended with a surprise performance of The Way I Loved You by Andy, the club’s president, which ended the night on a high note with a passion-filled performance.

Although the performances by the vocalists and band were incredible, let's not forget about the organising team behind the unforgettable night. I've had the opportunity to speak to the person in charge of the event,  Andy and he shared his experience in making the event possible.

“How did TMC come up with the idea for a Taylor Swift Tribute Concert”

Andy : We had an idea, since Taylor Swift was coming to Singapore, she was boosting the economy of Singapore, so it seemed like the perfect fundraising event. We also wanted to give a space for people who love Taylor Swift that didn't get to go to the Eras Tour. I myself almost didn’t get to go, so I thought, I’m the president so I’m going to make a Taylor Swift tribute concert.

“What are some challenges that you faced while organising the event?”

Andy : It was hard trying to take up after the former president because I admire her a lot and she was very successful during her time as president, and also trying to keep up with the organisational stuff and facets of event planning. I have never really organised an event like this before, so there were a few issues dealing with outside parties and a few mistakes were made, initially we were supposed to book Lecture Theatre 21/22 but I underestimated the size of the crowd and we booked Lecture Theatre 12 not knowing we were going to be oversold. But it all turned out pretty okay in the end.

“How did you feel once the event was over or tell me about your overall reflection of your work?”

Andy : I am happy that the event went well, we can say that it was a success. It went a bit overtime, we were supposed to close at 8:30 p.m. but that’s alright. I was happy about the crowd; one of the main concerns of the event was the crowd, but I underestimated the sheer amount of people that came. The performance team was fantastic, I saw their performances already during practice but they definitely exceeded my expectations. A special thank you to my members, the board of directors and the performing team.

This Taylor Swift tribute concert was a testament to the power of her music and the dedication of her fans. The night was filled with unforgettable performances that celebrated the diverse range of Swift's work, leaving everyone with a newfound appreciation for her artistry and for the talent of Taylor’s Music Club to pull off such a phenomenal event. Be sure to make it for their upcoming Open Mic since it’s sure to be as amazing as this concert!
